Day #174: Keep Momentum

A few months back I wrote about one’s ability to combine habit and willpower to create further motivation. Yesterday I noted that step by step you will pick up momentum and if you want results, you need to apply some action to keep momentum.

I’ve always been one to aspire further and higher than the day before. The urge and drive I have to move forward, higher, further, deeper and closer towards my goals, grows stronger each day as I apply daily discipline. This creates a new habit through willpower, which further proves to myself that I can and that I will conquer. In doing so, I am motivated more and more by the result.

I remember back when I started to run 10 km in a single session. It was 2 years ago I was completing my first 5 km. And less than a 3 years before that I was barely surviving a 3 km run. The point is, the longer you push, the stronger you push and the deeper you push, soon enough you will GROW, and you will step out of the box you were held by and you will be released into a bigger box. This is called your comfort zone. Then you start again. Working day by day to move forward and closer to your goal.

The sooner you give up, the sooner you accept defeat.

My challenge to you is; before you start moving forward, why not take a moment to identify the next step it is you need to take. What will it require from you and what will you do about it? Sometimes, we can be so caught up in moving forward we miss what we are actually trying to achieve.

Regardless, each day is a chance to start fresh, start clean and a chance to start again. Will you be willing to take today as that chance? Are you up for it?

Start now. Start where you are. Start with fear. Start with pain. Start with doubt. Start with hands shaking. Start with voice trembling but start. Start and don’t stop. Start where you are, with what you have. Just … start. — Ijeoma Umebinyuo

Day #173: You Decide

Today is your chance at a fresh start. It is a chance to take on the new and forget the old. You decide. Whatever it is that is holding you back, it is time to shake it off. But in order to be rid of these things and to move forward, it is going to require you to make some tough and even harder choices.

You have the power and the ability to do amazing things, and it is all controlled with a simple YES or NO.

Will you continue to do what you are doing and avoid making the necessary decisions?

Or will you make the hard decision to make a stand and fight yourself to be the change you have been looking for and to take ownership of your life?

“My life didn’t please me, so I created my life.” ― Coco Chanel

It wont be easy, but each day is a single step and it only takes a few steps to build momentum. So I suggest you go cold turkey, you get serious and you start taking the required steps. In no time you will be looking back in awe to see how far you have come.

Just remember, that every mountain has a view at the top which makes the struggle and climb well worth it.

Will you make the decision to change your life? The question I ask you is… how much do you want it?

How much do you want this change? As only you can make the decision and choose to fight overcoming it.

Day #172: Be The Wiser

Be of the wiser, be the change you want to see in the world…

Yesterday I was clever, so I wanted to change the world. Today I am wise, so I am changing myself. – Rumi

If we spent more time focusing on fixing ourselves, trusting ourselves, believing in ourselves and learning to be confident, then we would have the characteristics to enable and equip us to change the world.

I’m not trying to say that we are all not wise, but sometimes, we think we are making a difference doing something, when really all we are doing is exactly that; thinking that we are. Being clever is great, but being wiser will always supersede being clever.

Knowledge is knowing Tomato is a fruit Wisdom is not putting it in fruit salad –  Shwetabh Shekhar

Cleverness/intelligence is the ability to solve a problem. Where, wisdom is the ability to know whether the problem needs to be solved, whether it’s the right problem, and whether it’s a problem at all.

Being able to solve the problem is always required, but knowing whether it is even required, will save you from doing something that wasn’t necessary.

We may have all the intelligence or cleverness in the world, therefore we think this will help change the world. When really you need to be the change you want to see in the world.

My challenge to you is; next time you think you are making a difference, changing the world or providing a solution. Ensure that there is a problem to solve. The last thing you want to happen is, you were the problem the whole time and you were changing everything around you to make it better. When really you are the one that needs to change, adapt and understand.

“Everyone thinks of changing the world, but no one thinks of changing himself.” – Leo Tolstoy

Day #171: Desire Over Fear

Self control, discipline, choice and commitment are crucial aspects when it comes to taking what you desire to the place you want it to be. Unfortunately, we tend to set some unexpected limits on ourselves, which usually end up delaying our chances and progress to meeting and fulfilling our desires. Maybe it is because we hold back in fear, or we are insecure due to what society thinks. But if you really want it badly enough, you need to learn to cut through all this red tape and see that there are no limits.

If you realized how powerful your thoughts are, you would never think a negative thought. – Peace Pilgrim

Desire is defined as a strong feeling of wanting to have something, or wishing for something to happen.

Fear is defined as an unpleasant emotion caused by the belief that someone or something is dangerous, likely to cause pain, or a threat.

As soon as you start to take FEAR and put this greater than your DESIRE, this desire will be overwhelmed, diminished and drowned.

At times when an individual desires something, there are often mental barriers and sometimes-physical barriers that prevent him or her to obtain whatever he or she wants.
As noted before, these barriers may be realistic, and it may seem like there is no way around the circumstances or the situation at hand.

However, the old idiom says, “If there is a will, there is a way.”

If nobody listened to their desires, then we would be dull, primitive beings.  Our desires shape the world we live in, and it is up to us to understand and know what we truly desire.

People do not have to accept the common desires that are being promoted in society. You have the freedom to live according to yourself, you have the freedom and right to live according to whatever your dream life is as long, as it does not harm anybody or anything.

Let the sentiment of desire override the sentiment of fear if, and only if, you are living ethically and morally.

Day #170: Constant Change

Change is always around the corner, ready to pounce at any time. Most of the time we run from the very thought of change. However, from time to time we will accept it and move on with it. What I suggest is when change comes it is better to embrace, adapt and adjust, rather than trying to fight it. As constant change is here to stay.

Why embrace it?

You can meet somebody tomorrow who has better intentions for you than someone you’ve known forever… Time means nothing… Character does.

So at any given moment, your life can change for the better or the worse, however… if you embrace it, you will always be stretching yourself outside of your comfort zone, which means you will always come out that little wiser and brighter. Yes there may be some lessons learned, or some trial and error, but you will be building your character, your wisdom and hey… you may even have some fun along the way.

So next time a little bit of change comes your way, jump on the change train, go for the ride and be ready for anything.

As one day it just might be the change you have been looking for your whole life.

Day #169: Get That Passion

I know I am like a broken record when it comes to chasing your dreams and planning and practicing your passions. But the fact is, these are important elements to ones life and the sooner you realize it and take action, the sooner you will understand even more. Plus I think you will be a whole lot more happier, energetic and enthusiastic.

If you are still trying to figure it all out, today I have a few contextual points which may help you identify what it is you should be doing as your passion.

I would suggest having a read and asking yourself these. Maybe do it alone and write it down, then explore deeper into what these mean to you. If you want to be very detailed, try writing down 10 separate points for each of these, expanding your thinking and really locking down your passion.

  • Is there something you already love doing?  If there’s already something you love doing, you’re ahead of the game. What is it? Can you list 10 things you love doing?
  • What do you spend hours reading about? This will mean you love or enjoy knowing more about it.
  • Brainstorm. Nothing comes to mind right away? Well, get out a sheet of paper, and start writing down ideas. Anything that comes to mind, write it down. Look around your house, on your computer, on your bookshelf, for inspirations, and just write them down. There are no bad ideas at this stage. Write everything down, and evaluate them later.
  • Ask around, and surf for possibilities. Ask other people for ideas. See what others have discovered as their passions. Look all over the Internet for ideas. The more possibilities you find, the more likely your chances of finding your true passion. Find 10 sources of inspiration.
  • Give it a try first. It’s best to actually test your new idea before jumping into it as a career. You may be passionate about it for a few days, but where the rubber meets the road is whether you’re passionate about it for at least a few months. If you pass this test, you have probably found it. So write down things you would like to dive into regarding this passion.
  • Do as much research as possible. Know as much about your passion as possible. If this has been a passion for a while, you may have already been doing this. You can always learn more, so be willing to grow.
  • Practice, and practice, and practice some more. Don’t go into it with amateur skill level. If you want to make money — to be a professional — you need to have professional skills. What 10 ways you will keep yourself committed to practicing?
  • Never quit trying. Can’t find your passion at first? Give up after a few days and you’re sure to fail. Keep trying, for months on end if necessary, and you’ll find it eventually. There may be more than one passion in your lifetime, so explore all the possibilities.

Keep trying, and try again, until you succeed. Success doesn’t come easy, so giving up early is a sure way to fail. Keep trying, and you’ll get there. – Unknown

Day #168: Action Equals Energy

As a follow on to yesterday’s enthusiasm, today will continue on with 8 things which will promote energy and an energetic lifestyle. All you need to do is, do it everyday…
Just as the world continues to turn, a new day brings endless opportunities. A new day generates renewed energy and hope  so choose how you will respond to the days events by welcoming each new day with optimism. It is vital to acknowledge the mess in your life no matter what form it takes and then embrace change.

These are short and to the point, however it is suggested you take these points and think about them, dig deeper into them and adapt them to how they can be applied to your life.

Hoping drains your energy. Action creates energy. – Robert Kiyosaki

Energetic people…

1. Do meaningful work

They love what they do for a living. And, when you love what you do for a living, you simply have more energy. So, if you hate your job, now might be a good time to try to fix that.

2. Get enough Zzz’s

The most energetic people in the world sustain their levels of intensity by getting at least 7-to-8 hours of sleep every single night. I think this is debatable, as it will work different for everyone.

3. Take specific rest and renewal

Elite athletes take a psychological break by “going somewhere else mentally.” What do you do? A tennis player, for example, might walk away after a set, playing with the strings on his tennis racket, while his opponent uses those few crucial seconds to stress out about what to do next.

4. Do what it takes to stay fully charged

Tom Rath said, there are three keys to energizing your work and life:

1. Energy (Eat well and sleep enough.)
2. Interactions (Surround yourself with the right people.)
3. Meaning (Do meaningful work that gives you a sense of purpose by focusing on how it benefits other people rather than just yourself.)

5. Eat well

They have a proportional amount of fiber, protein and essential fatty acids to keep them energized and focused to dominate their day. What are you having?

6. Exercise regularly

One of the reasons exercise increases your energy is because it boosts your metabolism and gets your blood pumping and flowing through your body.

It even helps with cognitive function.

7. Practice mindfulness

Take the time to think about what you are doing…
– Stop
– Take a deep breath
– Observe the situation
– Proceed appropriately

8. Always learning

They listen to audiobooks. They take courses. Energetic people are curious people, and they’re constantly on the lookout for new and interesting learning opportunities. They have a voracious appetite for learning.

Day #167: Stay Enthusiastic

If you are up for the challenge, each day, each morning, rise with the intention to become the most positive and enthusiastic person you know. You will be surprised at the difference you will make not only to the people around you but also to the yourself. The influence you will reflect and the happiness you will project, will make your day so much better.

“Every man is enthusiastic at times. One man has enthusiasm for 30 minutes, another for 30 days, but it is the man who has it for 30 years that makes a success out of his life.” — Edward B. Butler

Practicing gratitude is a powerful way to help stay enthusiastic in life, especially when it try’s to drown you. So even in the thick, the dark and the hard, here are 10 tips to help you stay enthusiastic, even when you are crazy busy.

Act Enthusiastic

Force yourself to act enthusiastic, and you’ll become more enthusiastic,” was Frank Bettgers’ number one rule. He challenged people to try this for just 30 days, because this one change could easily revolutionize your life. He went on to become one of the most successful salesmen of his day, and a best-selling self-help author.

Take 15 minutes a day to do something you love

If you can’t put fifteen minutes into doing what you love, you’re making an excuse. Try this yourself. Make a list of everything you love to do. What’s calling to you right now? No matter how busy you are, take 15 minutes to do something that gives you joy, and watch your enthusiasm return.

Get enough sleep!

Learning and memory, metabolism and weight, cardiovascular health, and immune function all suffer when you don’t get enough sleep, and so does mood. Need I say no more…

Feed yourself well

When your body doesn’t get the nutrients it needs, it affects brain chemistry, which impacts mood, memory, and cognitive function. The right diet actually changes how the brain functions, which can boost your mood, help you deal with stress, and make it easier to stay enthusiastic.

Move your body

When you’re feeling unenthusiastic, you may want to head for the couch, but instead of lying around go do something that will make you sweat. Take a walk, swim, dance, go throw a football around with a friend. Anything that gets your body doing what it was made for (i.e., moving!). This will make it easier for you to find your enthusiasm again, heck you might even surprise yourself. I did.

Own self-compassion

Self-compassion is the practice of noticing what you’re feeling, remembering that you’re human. If you practice responding to yourself with self-compassion rather than aggression, you’ll discover it’s a much more pleasant way to live, and when life is better, it’s so much easier to stay enthusiastic.

Meditation

This will vary for many, but spending the time with your creator even just 10 minutes a day can spur on a positive change!

See “whats going well’

Human beings seem to be wired to focus on what’s not going well. It’s important to notice this, of course, so we can make adjustments, but it’s equally important to notice what’s going well.

De-clutter

It is hard to be enthusiastic, when you are weighed down. This is an internal and external element too. Keep your environment de-cluttered as well as your heart.

Surround yourself with the enthused!

Enthusiasm is contagious. Follow it and share it.

Hopefully some if not all of these enthusiastic tips will help you make your life that extra exciting!

Day #166: Optimism Is Enough

Yep, you guessed it. Tuesday is here and once again it should be the best kind of day, like any day. Are you pumped? Are you excited? Are you ready? Are you willing? Are you determined? Are you positive?

I know over and over, people dread the start of the week and I have reminded you nearly each week that if you are not excited for what Monday has to bring let alone every other day, in this case Tuesday, than maybe you’re not doing the exciting thing you should be.

If there is one thing, that will entice and reshape your perspective of any day, it is optimism. No it may not be a natural state for some, but with application, the right mindset and determination, you will be surprised where this positive stubbornness can take you.

As per Brian Tracy’s quote; If you want success and happiness, then optimism is the one quality that is more likely to be associated with this result.

In the case you are unfamiliar with ‘Optimism’, it goes a little something like this:  hopefulness and confidence about the future or the success of something.

So today as you walk into a new adventure, will you take hopefulness and confidence with the plan to conquer not only today, but as the week progresses?

Set the level and set the bar, make Tuesday a new baseline for your week. So make sure you make it a good one!

Take hold of optimism and just see where you can go!

“Optimism is the one quality more associated with success and happiness than any other.” — Brian Tracy

Day #165: Today Is Your Today

Today I am going to share with you a small snippet from the well-known Dr Seuss:

You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose. You’re on your own. And you know what you know. And YOU are the guy who’ll decide where to go…

Life is full of choices. Do you choose where to go or do you let someone else decide for you?

You’re off to great places! Today is your today. Your mountain is waiting, so you get on your way!

Take that first step. Whatever you do, don’t stand still. Dr. Seuss warns us about a universal law called inertia. This means that things keep doing what they’re doing. So, if you’re standing still, you’re likely to stay still. But if you’re moving forward, you’re more likely to keep moving forward.

So, what are you waiting for? Get on your way!

Some people base life on the accumulation of wealth, but there is always something better than a rich mans treasure chest,  a mans rich life.
